Fractures & Sprains

Expert Fracture and Sprain Treatment

Musculoskeletal injuries including fractures and sprains require prompt, appropriate medical care to ensure proper healing and prevent long-term complications. At Lowell Care, we provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment for bone fractures, ligament sprains, and other orthopedic injuries with on-site X-ray capabilities and expert orthopedic care.

Common Injuries We Treat: Fractures range from simple hairline cracks to complete breaks in bones, commonly affecting wrists, ankles, fingers, and ribs. Sprains involve stretching or tearing of ligaments that connect bones, frequently occurring in ankles, knees, and wrists. We also treat strains affecting muscles and tendons, dislocations, and other acute musculoskeletal injuries.

Recognizing Serious Injuries: Seek immediate care for visible bone deformity, inability to bear weight or use the injured area, severe pain that doesn’t improve with rest and pain medication, numbness or tingling in the injured area, significant swelling or bruising, or if you heard a “pop” when the injury occurred.

Emergency Assessment: Our evaluation includes detailed injury history and mechanism of injury, comprehensive physical examination assessing pain, swelling, and deformity, range of motion testing when appropriate, neurological assessment checking sensation and circulation, and immediate X-rays when fracture is suspected.

Diagnostic Capabilities: Our on-site digital X-ray equipment allows immediate fracture diagnosis without delays or referrals to other facilities. This rapid assessment enables prompt treatment decisions and appropriate care planning. When more advanced imaging is needed, we coordinate with local radiology services.

Fracture Treatment: Treatment depends on fracture type and location. Simple fractures may require casting or splinting to immobilize the bone during healing. Complex fractures might need reduction (realigning bone fragments) before immobilization. We provide appropriate pain management and detailed home care instructions for optimal healing.

Sprain and Strain Management: Acute sprain treatment follows the RICE protocol: Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. We provide proper bracing or wrapping techniques, recommend appropriate activity modifications, prescribe anti-inflammatory medications when indicated, and refer for physical therapy when needed for complete recovery.

Pain Management: Injury-related pain requires appropriate management including prescription pain medications for severe injuries, anti-inflammatory drugs to reduce swelling and pain, topical pain relievers for localized discomfort, and education about safe pain medication use and expectations for recovery.

Immobilization and Support: We provide various immobilization options including removable splints for minor fractures, rigid casts for more serious breaks, braces and supports for sprains, and crutches or other mobility aids when weight-bearing restrictions are necessary.

Recovery and Rehabilitation: Proper healing requires following specific guidelines including activity restrictions and weight-bearing limitations, cast care and keeping immobilization devices dry, physical therapy referrals when appropriate for strength and mobility restoration, and gradual return to normal activities as healing progresses.

Follow-up Care: Fractures and significant sprains require ongoing monitoring including follow-up X-rays to ensure proper healing, cast changes or adjustments as swelling decreases, progress evaluations, and coordination with orthopedic specialists when complex injuries require additional intervention.
